The Butterfly Effect

“ It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world.”
Chaos Theory

The Butterfly Effect is a 2004 techno-thriller starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart and is one of my all-time favourite movies. The title is a reference to the Butterfly Effect, which theorizes that something seemingly innocuous, such as a butterfly’s wings, may be the catalyst for something larger, such as a tornado.

Kutcher and Smart may be surprised to know that the plot they acted out three years ago is being played out, slowly and painfully in the financial markets now. The credit crunch that has adversely affected financial markets from Europe all the way to down-under has its source stemmed from an insignificant practice – the lending of mortgage loans to poor credit borrower by U.S. mortgage lenders.

This dodgy practice has led to the current financial turmoil that has caused hedge funds and banks to go belly-up. The crisis is still being played-out. But one thing is certain; there will not be a Cinderella ending.
